![]() The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.įor midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. ![]() Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. ![]() These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite - see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.Ĭhandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers - and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen - it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Chandeliers - simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron - first made an appearance in early churches.

Mazda really had pretty minimal competition in small, inexpensive sport wagon niche. While this car didn’t have a particularly larger cargo area, it worked well enough as a second car. In the rear, both seats folded almost flat and the rear cargo area was covered by a hard, hinged panel. Mine had the cloth seats which looked great. With the requisite black on white instrument cluster, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, this interior really worked for me. A 2.0 liter, DOHC engine making 130 hp and a 135 ft lbs of torque, complete with red tower brace. I suspect I was just a bit north of Mazda’s target demographic, but this car punched all the right buttons for me. I do like red cars (and trucks).Īt the time of this purchase I was a 46 year old middle manager just looking for a little distraction from the stress of everyday life. And this wouldn’t be my last red car as you will see in future COALs. As a point of reference, this would be my sixth red car out of the thirteen I’ve owned up to that time. Next thing I know, I’m calling my wife to get her okay the trade of the Saturn in on this little red racer. I really wanted a 5 speed in yellow, but the only yellow one in stock was saddled with an automatic, so I took a red 5 speed for a test drive. I was already committed to buying one of these little wagons before I had even sat in one. She was enthusiastic, but not in a pushy way, and the buying experience went pretty well. My salesperson was a woman, a first for me. So anyway, one fine spring day, I headed over to Polar Chevrolet and Mazda in White Bear Lake to take a look at one of these little wagons. At least that’s how I rationalized it to my wife. The Saturn was fine, no issues, but it lacked the flexibility we wanted in a second car. Our second car was a 1996 Saturn SL2 which came into the fleet when I remarried in 2001. Since it was winter and I didn’t buy new cars in winter, the idea of going to take a look at the Protege5 just sort of simmered on the back burner. I came very close to pulling the trigger on the 323 derived Mercury Tracer wagon but ended up with a first gen Camry wagon instead. I have always liked the Mazda hatchbacks, going all the way back to the first gen GLC, but for multiple reasons ownership had continued to elude me. This was back when Car and Driver was still relevant and I was still a subscriber. In the fall of 2001 I had received a mailing from Mazda promoting their new little hot hatch and coincidently, Car and Driver had run a favorable review in their October 2001 issue. If you’ve been keeping track, this was my fourth Mazda, all of which had premature rust. This piece by Michael Ionno from 2016 captures my experience perfectly, right down to the inevitable rust problems that continued to plague Mazdas in northern states. In fact, they’ve been the subject of two previous COAL articles. ![]() I suppose it should come as no surprise that the Protege5 has some fans here at Curbside Classic. the slightly twisted spokes on the 2002s. Mine were 2003 painted 5 spoke alloys with squared off spokes vs. The only difference I can remember was the wheels. My Protege5 was late enough in the cycle that the dealer actually called it a 2002-1/2. I’m ready for a change once the snow has melted. I always seem to buy my cars in spring I suspect the boredom of winter and six months of driving salt stained cars wears me down. I really wanted one of these in yellow, but I settled for a red one late in the 2002 model year. As with many other smart scales, you can set up a goal weight for yourself and connect to integrated programs such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Samsung Health and Google Fit. Make sure your Bluetooth is on so the scale properly connects to the app. On the app you get an extra 12 body composition readings: body mass index, body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, fat-free body weight, body water percentage, skeletal muscle, muscle mass, protein, bone mass, basal metabolic rate and metabolic age. The Qardio app connects to the scale and has simple steps to sync up and personalize your experience. So keep in mind that you may have to weigh yourself more than once to get the most accurate reading. The only time I noticed it was off from time to time was during the first measurement. Usually readings on the Qardio were accurate during the daily weigh-ins. It's one of the few scales that functions well on any surface - even a carpet - which is always a plus. It also has modes for pregnant people and people with implanted devices, avoiding potential harm or interference by turning off the electrical currents used by most smart scales to read metrics aside from weight. It's suitable for up to eight users and has several modes to pick from, including one for athletes and one called "out of sight" if you don't want the weight to appear on the scale. It has a weight capacity of up to 396 pounds. It's compatible with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, can be recharged with USB-C and it can read units in kilograms, stone and pounds. Admittedly it's large and heavy (weighing about 7 pounds), but the sleek design makes it an appealing piece of technology, even if it's just a scale. QardioBase X is our top pick because of its customizable functions and ability to be used on different surfaces. Before purchasing, take a look at our top picks for smart scales below. Taking into account each scale's consistency, accuracy and measurements provided, I determined which are worth buying. Then I tested them in my bathroom daily, weighing myself multiple times on each scale at the same time of day for two weeks. To break down the best smart scales on the market, I first established a control weight, recorded at a recent doctor's appointment, to compare against these scales. One thing's for sure: These scales keep getting smarter. That's why getting a premium smart scale may be worth the investment if you're trying to meet health and wellness goals and want to see data about progress beyond just weight. This makes it easier for you to track your overall health data. ![]() The best smart scales also connect to your phone and sync up with fitness apps like Apple Health and Google Fit. While analog scales remain the most popular, smart scales are becoming increasingly common. ![]() A good scale offers you a host of health metrics like body fat percentage, heart rate, and more. However, when you do get on a scale, it should give you more than just a number. Living a healthy lifestyle and monitoring your overall wellness includes a lot more than just tracking your weight. The box is typically located on either the driver or passenger side of the engine compartment near the fender. Visually identify the underhood fuse/relay box. Method 1 of 2: Removing the cooling fan relay in the underhood fuse/relay box If at any point it is not possible to avoid contact with the radiator fan assembly, it is recommended to disconnect the battery in order to render the radiator fan inoperable. Keep area around the fan blade clear in order to avoid injury. Warning: It is possible for the radiator cooling fan to operate with the ignition key in the “off” position. Note: Some manufacturers will also refer to the electronic control module (ECM) as a powertrain control module (PCM). To replace the cooling fan relay, there are two methods that we will cover for the positions mentioned above. The cooling fan relay is normally located in either the underhood fuse and relay center or mounted to the electric fan assembly behind the radiator. ![]() When the cooling fan relay gets its signal from the ECM, the wiring diagram will typically resemble the following illustration. ![]() This type of relay system also allows for use of smaller diameter wiring that takes up less room throughout the vehicle and can save considerable weight on today’s increasingly computer controlled systems. When the fan relay does not work, then the proper signal will not be received and the fan cannot cool the system down. By using a lower voltage signal to control the relay, there is less stress on the rest of the wiring and charging system. The cooling fan relay takes the low voltage signal and internally switches the relay “on” to allow battery voltage to be supplied to the radiator cooling fan. The function of the cooling fan relay is to convert a low voltage signal from either the electronic control module (ECM) or a thermostatically controlled sensor. A cooling fan relay is used on vehicles that have an electrical fan to cool the engine. ![]() Our broad clientele includes Domestic & Foreign Institutional Investors, Foreign Portfolio Investors, Corporates and High – Net Worth Individuals amongst others. What's more, troubles with our truck's transmission ultimately resulted in its full replacement under warranty at 8424 miles, a fix that took it out of service for a whopping 29 days. After 30,000 miles, we're convinced that the eight-speed auto is the way to go in any Gladiator, frustrating as that may be for savers of manuals and the Jeep faithful's most devout members. The Gladiator's optional 260-hp 3.0-liter V-6 turbo diesel may have been a better fit for us, but it's not available on the Mojave trim. HIGHS: Highly unique among pickups, decent ride for a solid-axle Jeep, good fun in short doses. Our truck's sleepy 8.5-second run to 60 mph made it slow, significant amounts of road and wind noise inside the cabin (71 decibels at 70 mph) made it taxing to pilot, and a dismal 15-mpg result on our 75-mph highway test and a 16-mpg average overall made it woefully inefficient. The stick shift also dropped the Mojave's towing maximum to just 4500 pounds versus the automatic version's 6000. That was fun at first but eventually grew tiring. With fewer gear ratios and the engine's 260 pound-feet of torque arriving at a high 4400 rpm, we had to really work our truck's clunky shifter and clutch pedal to generate meaningful speed. Choosing the Mojave's six-speed manual transmission instead of its optional $2000 eight-speed automatic did the standard 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 no favors. We bear some of the brunt for our test truck's disappointment. ![]() But we weren't terribly sad to see it go. The Gladiator would eventually leave us before it could complete its 40,000-mile test, having bumped up against Stellantis's 12-month loan agreement limit. ![]() Unfortunately, our initial excitement began to fade as mechanical issues and day-to-day frustrations beset our Jeep pickup. Despite not being our top pick for pure pickup duty, as a third-place finish in a comparison test proved, the Gladiator was (and still is) a bolt of freshness in the mid-size truck segment, a novel workhorse with rugged presence, a convertible top, and a solid-axle Jeep lineage. ![]() In the wake of the Jeep Gladiator's 10Best win for its debut model year, our hopes were high as we welcomed a 2020 Mojave model into our long-term fleet. ![]() ![]() The country has four Arihant class SSBNs.
